What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the superior choice for long-term tooth replacement. The anchor posts that Dr. Nussbaum surgically implants into your jawbone take the place of your tooth root to support the tissue structures that your tooth root used to support. Consequently, implants support the overall structure of your face, prevent bone loss, and act as natural teeth.

What Should I Expect From the Procedure?

Getting dental implants is not a short-lived process. While it is worth it, getting implants is a months-long commitment. Before you can have the surgery, Dr. Nussbaum will take impressions, x-rays, and 3-D images of your teeth and jaw to ensure that there is sufficient bone and gum tissue and to take measurements for implant placement.

Following the x-rays and molds, Dr. Nussbaum will numb the area and implant the post(s) into your jawbone. Once the anchor post is placed, you will have to spend the next several weeks, roughly six weeks, healing. During this time, the post will actually fuse to your jawbone through a process called osteointegration.

Once your jaw has healed and the posts have properly fused to your jawbone, the artificial teeth will be placed on the abutment—the part of the implant that connects the tooth to the post. Several fittings may be required, so this process may take a few months. Once the artificial teeth are properly fitted, they will be permanently affixed to the abutments, finalizing the implant process.
